Fake Lawyer Arrested After Using Wrong Legal Jargon In Court

A Ghanaian man pretending to be a lawyer has been arrested after he used wrong legal language in court. The suspect, Emmanuel Marfo, 23, appeared at the Koforidua Circuit Court, on Friday as a defence attorney in a civil dispute between Peter Amanor and Hanson Annoh, who alleged that Amanor failed to pay him, money he lent him. According to Ebenezer Tetteh, Public Relations Officer for the Police in the Eastern Region, Judge Evelyn Asamoah, who presided over the case, became suspicious when Marfo (who was defending Amanor) used an incorrect legal language in court. The judge proceeded to ask Marfo where he attended school. He replied that he went to the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration’s School of Law. He was then asked to furnish proof, but he could provide none. Asamoah ordered for his arrest. Initial police investigations revealed that Marfo never took nor passed the bar examination. United States President, Donald Trump, called his Nigeria counterpart, Muhammadu Buhari, “lifeless,” after their April meeting, claimed global business newspaper, Financial Times, in a recent publication. Breaking: Court Frees 114 IPOB Women

A high court in Owerri on Friday evening released, unconditionally, the 114 women suspected to be members of the outlawed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra. The women were remanded by a magistrate’s court in Owerri on Monday and Thursday respectively, after they were arrested and arraigned by the Police for demanding to know the whereabouts of missing IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kalu. The bail application filed by the lead counsel to the women, Ejiofor Uche, was not opposed, as the Police had no representation in court. The court had granted the bail application, and freed the women unconditionally. Their release sparked off wild jubilation on the court premises and within Owerri, the state capital. 'Pastor' Rapes Woman During 'Deliverance Session'

The police on Thursday arraigned a 32- year-old fake pastor for allegedly raping a woman in an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court. The accused, Micheal Akpan, who resides at 17, Unity Close, Obawole, Iju, a suburb of Lagos is charged with one-count of rape. The Prosecutor, Insp Raji Akeem told the court that the offence was committed on Aug. 17 at the accused’s residence. Raji said that the accused pretended to be a pastor and told the complainant, a 29- year -old, who was on her way to work, that he had powers to deliver her from satanic oppression. He told the court that the accused told the complainant to buy seven bottles of olive oil for cleansing and also told her to meet him in his house later that day. On getting to the house, he said, the accused shut the door at her and raped her. Raji added that the complainant reported the case at the police station and the accused was arrested. Angry Buddhist Monk Kills Nine-Year-Old During Prayer Session

A nine-year-old Buddhist novice has died after a beating by a Thai monk who allegedly battered him with a stick and slammed his head against a pillar, officials said Friday. Monk Suphachai Suthiyano, 64, flew into a rage during a prayer session last weekend when the young disciple disrupted the ceremony with his “playful” behaviour. The monk allegedly assaulted Wattanapol Sisawad with a bamboo stick at the temple in Kanchanaburi, two hours west of Bangkok, striking him on his back several times before bashing his head into a pillar. The child fell into a coma and passed away late Thursday, a hospital worker at Kanchanaburi provincial hospital told AFP on Friday, requesting anonymity. U.S-China Trade War Escalates As New Tariffs Kick In

The U.S. and China escalated their acrimonious trade war on Thursday, implementing punitive 25 per cent tariffs on 16 billion dollars worth of each other’s goods, even as mid-level officials from both sides resumed talks in Washington. The world’s two largest economies have now slapped tit-for-tat tariffs on a combined 100 billion dollars of products since early July, with more in the pipeline, adding to risks to global economic growth. China’s Commerce Ministry said Washington was “remaining obstinate” by implementing the latest tariffs, which kicked-in on both sides as scheduled at 12.01 noon in Beijing (0401 GMT). “China resolutely opposes this, and will continue to take necessary countermeasures,” it said in a brief statement, adding that Beijing will file a complaint over the latest tariffs with the World Trade Organisation (WTO). Herdsman Machets Colleague To Death Over N2,000

An Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan on Thursday ordered the  remand of a herdsman, Jaye Mohammadu, in Agodi Prisons for allegedly killing his mate over N2,000. The Chief Magistrate, Mr Abdulateef Adebisi, said that Mohammadu, 18, should be remanded at the prisons, pending an advice from the Oyo State Director of Public Prosecutions. Mohammadu’s plea was not taken by the court, when his Counsel, Mr Oritshuwa Uwawah, appeared for him. The magistrate, however, adjourned the case until Sept. 25 for mention. The Police Prosecutor, Cpl. Ojo Bewaji, told the court that Mohammadu and the deceased, Gambo Tashi, 22, worked as herdsmen for one Alhaji Kata at Aba Olode, Kishi in Oyo State. Bewaji alleged that the accused unlawfully caused the death of Mohammadu by attacking him with cutlass. Barber Allegedly Defrauds Two Americans Of $23,000

A 27-year-old barber, Wale Kehinde, was on Thursday arraigned at an Ikeja High Court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly defrauding two Americans of $23,000 through romance and lottery scams. Kehinde, a resident of No. 8, Ogundare Awise Lane, Gbagada, Lagos, however, pleaded not guilty to the four-count charge of obtaining money by false pretenses and possession of fraudulent documents. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Wednesday mocked the Presidency over its claim that President Muhammadu Buhari walked 800-metre as evidence of his fitness to run in 2019. Mr Abubakar, who is eyeing the presidential ticket of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, said he would work to create jobs for Nigerians and not build “illusion”. Bayelsa Journalist Jones Abiri, standing trial for alleged involvement in militancy, returned to the warm embrace of his wife, children and colleague on Tuesday in Yenagoa. Abiri, who was received at the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre, expressed his optimism of getting justice. Abiri was arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) since July 2016 and detained for over two years without trial. He was, however, arraigned before a Magistrates’ Court this month and subsequently, granted bail. Speaking at a reception to welcome him to Yenagoa, two years after his ordeal, Abiri said that contrary to the views held by the DSS, he was ready to face trial and prove his innocence. The police in Ekiti on Tuesday the arrest of a a mentally challenged person who allegedly stabbed to death the traditional ruler of the community, Oba Gbadebo Ogunsakin. The State Police Command Public Relations Officer, (PPRO), DSP Caleb Ikechukwu made this known in Ado Ekiti. Egwuonwu, who works with the Samaria Hospital, Ago, Lagos State, said that staphylococcus aureus was a bacterium found in human body. “Some bacteria such as staphylococcus aureus is found everywhere in the human body. It will be good for people to know that; especially women. “That it is everywhere is not the issue; it is when in a particular organ or in the body in an amount harmful to the body that it becomes an issue,’’ Egwuonwu said.
