A serial killer, who strangled five female hitchhikers, was found dead in his prison cell in Germany after trying to perform an autoerotic act, officials said on Monday.
“The 62-year-old man, who has not been identified under Germany’s strict privacy laws, died as a result of an electric shock,’’ a spokesman for the prison in the western German city of Bochum said.
The spokesman added the man was found dead on Sunday after he connected several cables to the main power supply for the purpose of sexual self-stimulation.
An autopsy showed he died due to “cardiac arrhythmia after an electric current ran through his chest.’’
“There were no indications of suicide or the involvement of a third party,’’ officials said.
The man was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2008 after he strangled five female hitch-hikers between 1983 and 1990 and raped three of them.
He had been convicted 17 years after the last murder when investigators tracked him down using a DNA sample. (dpa/NAN)
