The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Ibrahim Kpotu Idris, said the police were not part of the security personnel that laid siege on the National Assembly.
Speaking to State House correspondents after close-door meeting with Acting President Yemi Osinbajo which lasted an hour, Idris said he was yet to be briefed about the event.
He said the siege on the National Assembly was surprising, adding that the police would soon issue a statement in relation to the impasse.
“Obviously, like I said, I have not got a detailed brief on that. In fact we are going to issue a (press) release (on that),’’ he said.
Acting President Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday sacked Mr. Lawal Daura as the Director General of the State Security Service (SSS) with immediate effect over invasion of the premises of the National Assembly by SSS personnel.
Osinbajo also condemned the unauthorised standoff at the National Assembly complex, describing it as “a gross violation of constitutional order, rule of law and all acceptable notions of law and order.”
He said the “unlawful act, which was done without the knowledge of the Presidency, is condemnable and completely unacceptable.’’
The Acting President assured Nigerians that all persons within the law enforcement apparatus, who participated in “this travesty’’ would be identified and subjected to appropriate disciplinary action.
